My brother and I climb into bed with our bigger sister as she tells us about her life growing up in Grenada. She looks down at me and kisses me on my forehead while confidently assuring me that I won’t be attending any sweet sixteens or proms. I sadly pout in the dark, knowing she cannot see me to lecture me and complain about all the liberties she did NOT have growing up with my dad.–But these lectures…these stories…surprisingly are what I miss the most.–

Daddy Keith, is what she calls our dad. She tells my brother and I, this name had to be adopted because the amount of children in the house “back in the day”. So many of her cousins would attempt to call their own dads, that it was necessary to have some form of distinction.

Debbian Antoine is my big sister. Well, socio-biographically she is my “half-sister” but everyone believes us to be near twins. Oh yeah and for the amount of complete and utter nonsense she has had to deal with between my brother and me, she’s rightfully earned her familial label of “Sister”. From the stories I have heard, Debbie’s mom is what we call delirious, mental and a complete basket case. My sister was born in Grenada (West Indies) in the year of 1974. Yet till this day, her mother has denied the existence of any of her children. Thus, my sister has lived with our dad until they moved to the U.S and he married my mom. We are a family, her family. She moved out on her own once she was of age, and our sisterly bond was sealed once I was able to walk and talk. We would do everything together. From people watching, to shopping to making jokes, to straightening our hair to even “breaking day” watching Korean romance shows…my sister was me. Her apartment was my home away from home. Whenever she was missing in action, if you called my phone, you would find her. Her place was a sanctuary, away from my parents, my friends and all other distractions. We would order Chinese food and gossip about all the hypocrites in the Church. It became so bad that my mom had to almost ban us from seeing each other.

In 2005 it all changed. My sister decided to betray me. Betray us, betray the Antoine name. She got married. Instantly, like Joan Didion, I felt deceived. She didn’t ask me, she just did it. As she put purple flowers in my hair (I was the stupid flower girl), I couldn’t help but to think why? Is this really happening ? Was it something I did, said, didn’t do? She chose a tall lanky Caucasian man over me (Anthony Harris). And all of a sudden she became Debbian Antoine-Harris. He turned out to be fully Grenadian, quite a shocker, but still. Why? (One time she tried to pull the I’m-getting-married-stunt with another man and my dad completely nullified it..I was ecstatic) But this time around, the second time around, my spidey senses kicked in. It was clear she wanted independency, responsibility and autonomy. But what about me? What if I am not ready to add a wolf to our already perfect wolfpack? What if I didn’t request a wolf at all?

What is marriage really? Dictionaries describe it as “a relationship in which two people have pledged themselves to each other in the manner of a husband and wife.” However, it seemed to me to be a disunion from my family to this arbitrary construction worker she decided to wed. In my eyes she wished to train him. As a recovering alcoholic–not to mention Grenadian–, he is loud and ignorantly confident. These traits are not curable under the Debbian-stroke-of-love but rather, cured with time and experience. In the years following 2005 I learned to appreciate if not love my brother-in-law. We crack jokes daily and every time I show up at his door he comically closes it and claims he married my sister not me. Countless times he went out of his way to visit me when I was sick in the hospital (monthly at times) and even always allows me into his and my sister’s minuscule new apartment. He was here to say and whether I approved or not, it would not change.

The harsh truth has jus hit home a couple months ago as I latched onto my sister’s hip before she left church on Sunday. Rather than seeing her beautiful, cynical face every weekend (and Monday, Tuesday and whatever else days I could manage to swing by against my mother’s wishes), I would not see her again until the following Sunday in church only. My sister was not Debbian Antoine. She was now Debbian Antoine-Harris. Her first priority was now this man that has leeched his familial name onto our own. I love him, but frankly, it’s how I feel. He’s weighing us down. Why is he here? My sister and I are no longer the inseparable dynamic duo we once her and it’s his fault. Now her excuse every Sunday for leaving early is that she must go home and iron. Ugh. Forget him, let him iron his own crinkly clothes.

But now I guess is a better time as any to confess. I am now 20 and after 8 years I’ve realized it’s not just my sister but it’s me. Like every other deprived friend in my life, my sister has not moved from the spot she holds. I am welcome to visit her anytime I wish. Yet once college started for me, our bond still existed but became less frequently acted on. Trivial visits to her home have become harder to create around studying, internships and part-time jobs. Could it have been me who has also married? Have I subconciously married the educational-societal factors in my life?

Just like my beautiful sister, it was time for me to become independent as a college student and as a woman. No longer did I require my sister as a baby-sitter to give me baths and feed my continuously hungry stomach. Although my name did not change, I was now also in a new relationship in the world, that is the relationship that brought along (not a recovering addict) but maturity and sophistication in preparation for the real obstacle of life. Thus, the ugly truth was, my sister entered a new stage and I followed closely after. It hit home quite rapidly but it served as a great complement to our already great bond. Now in addition to gossip and Korean romances, we converse on philosophical, marital and even religious morals, ideas and teachings. Our bond now, might be even stronger than it was before she married. As individuals married to physical and metaphysical aspects of life, we connect on levels that were otherwise incomprehensible for my young mind before her wedding in 2005. My sister is now a graduated, married, registered RN with a driver’s license (something my older brother and I got before her) with an enriched perspective on life.

I truly love Debbian Antoine but I adore Debbian Antoine-Harris even more. She is the woman who adopted the name of a new life but retains and cherishes the memories of her old life. As for me, I too have rebelled. My own marriage has disconnected me at times from my sister but for the better. Just like our past where I constantly followed in her footsteps, I too married and became a professional in the obstacle we call Life.

    I really enjoyed reading this piece. In the beginning I found myself googling where Grenada is. I would of liked for you to continue describing how it is in Grenada. I also want to know why do you miss the stories and the lectures the most?
    I really like your conclusion, that you yourself realized that you were also growing older and are now married to school but thats the obstacle that we need to take in order to live our life. How is your relationship with your sister now? Do you still feel like her husband is weighing the relationship?

    I think your story as a narrator really begins in the second to last paragraph, which is a real shame, as I wanted to hear more about it as a reader. Maybe this could’ve been introduced earlier, and other details about the narrator’s brother-in-law could be introduced later with details that relate to the personal growth in “maturity and sophistication” in the narrator after her sister got married. If relevant, maybe even juxtapose the new relationship with the brother-in-law or even the changing relationship with the sister as well with the “new relationship in [sic] the world” (in = with?).
    The conclusion isn’t very conclusory; I didn’t feel that enough information was given in this piece about many things discussed in the last paragraph, e.g. Debbian’s retaining and cherishing of old memories, life disconnecting narrator from sister at times, obstacles in the narrator’s own life that has made her a professional at it even at age 20 (not saying this is impossible, I’m saying that it certainly is, especially with regard to your previous piece; however, a reader must assume that he/she has not read previous works by this author in a new piece, unless it is a following chapter in the same book. Additionally, I am sure you have more obstacles you would also like to discuss).
    I think you have drawn a great parallel here with the sister’s marriage to the narrator’s marriage with the world, however, as mentioned before, I feel that this needs to be brought to the forefront of this piece, as it doesn’t sound like the piece was written exclusively about the narrator’s sister–especially with an ending line focused on the narrator’s lesson gained from the relationship with the sister.

    I like how the author references the dictionary then gives his own translation of marriage. When the author stated, “Countless times he went out of his way to visit me when I was sick in the hospital (monthly at times) and even always allows me into his and my sister’s minuscule new apartment.” I was wondering why the writer was sick and in the hospital many times. I like how the writer connects to his audience when he states, “But now I guess is a better time as any to confess” as if he is comfortable to tell strangers what he has been holding inside. When you stated, “I was now also in a new relationship in the world, that is the relationship that brought along (not a recovering addict) but maturity and sophistication in preparation for the real obstacle of life” I wanted to know more about your new relationship and if how does it have affect on your sister?

    I really enjoyed this piece. It’s wonderful, the way that you show your own process of maturing through this piece. The flow of the piece works really well for me. From the start, with you being super attached to your sister, to the end where you overcome your indignation and anger at her for marrying, it is well paced and you switch sides suddenly which keeps the reader on their toes.
    I feel like the character comes off a little too immature in the beginning. Give us some of the faults of your sister’s new husband, even if they were small or imaginary even. I want some justification for you dislike of him, besides the fact that he took your sister’s time. I feel like that would make the narrator more relate-able.

    The piece is reflective and most of it sounds like you were a child when you and your sister were the closest. The subtext sounds like your family life was hectic and your home unstable making the sisterly bond you had more important to your life.

    You wrap up the piece well by saying that you too became a professional in life by getting married and creating your own life but I wish there was more to your development than that. The piece is centered on you losing the closeness with your sister but I wish it was explained more why that bond was so crucial for you. What did your relationship mean to your sister?

    Great story, i felt like it had a nice flow to it, i cant say anything bad about it but a couple things

    The mention of Didion isnt necessary it just make it seem like you wanted to emulate her style, and this reference was exclusive for this class. you could of elaborated on this sense of betrayal since im mostly relying mostly on didion’s story rather than your own to feel this emotion since i didnt think yoi instilled these feelings clearly, making the protaganish feel like no empathy, consequently losing your audience rr

    Your piece reflects the deep emotional connection you have with your sister. This line, “My sister decided to betray me. Betray us, betray the Antoine name. She got married.”, shows the reader how much Debbian really meant to you. Normally, siblings wouldn’t really be so upset over them getting married to someone, but in your case, this was something that deeply affected you. The consequences of her marriage on the relationship you two had were something that you were probably not ready to come to terms with. I appreciated the rawness of the piece; your description of your real emotions was what intrigued me about this piece. i would suggest to show more through examples and dialogue. You told us a lot about your family dynamics but i would like some scenes where the relationships play out. Also, I think your conclusion is to conclusive. Try not to tie every string for us because sometimes it’s more interesting to leave the reader wondering.

    I appreciated the story because it uses a coming of age theme indirectly by using her Debbie-Antoine-Harris experience to show how the main character deals with maturity. The voice of the narrator was informative and comical; for instance, the third paragraph has some interesting terms like “socio-biographically” and “educational-societal” that are introduced to the reader rather humorously. This was a revealing line, “We would order Chinese food and gossip about all the hypocrites in the Church. It became so bad that my mom had to almost ban us from seeing each other” because you indirectly indict you and your sister as hypocrites.

    Where is the brother mentioned in the piece later on? This line sounds too clique, “Her apartment was my home away from home,” so maybe you could rework this line differently. I want to see a dialogue between the nameless character (the speaker) and Anthony Harris. In the line, “My sister is now a graduated, married, registered RN with a driver’s license (something my older brother and I got before her) with an enriched perspective on life” is a great moment to include an anecdote.

    The whole betrayal thing becoming synonymous with marriage; it’s powerful.

    I’m not sure how I feel about the happy ending of the piece, but I’m glad the author has a positive take on the whole thing.

    When I was first reading this, I thought to myself “why do I care?” I wasn’t very drawn in to this piece. For the mostpart, we as a class have done pretty well with our introductions, but sometimes I want to be drawn in more to people’s stories.

    I like the thoughtful tone of this piece; the reflection leading to a conclusion. I can relate to that, and I really appreciate that.

    I feel like Debbian Antoine played the role of mother while sharing that strong connection with you, which is probably why you felt like she had abandoned you when she got married. Maybe you were closer with her than to your actual mom. Were you at all close to your mom? I enjoyed feeling that bond between you and her while reading this piece. The piece gives me feelings of nostalgia and a period of coming of age. I have a sister who is 12 years older than I am and I feel like she was my Debbian Antoine until she moved out of state and became Debbian Antoine-Harris so to speak. I would like to read a scene between you and her, so I can experience the bond that you two shared. At what point did you start to realize that you liked Mrs. Harris and accepted her as a married woman? Do you accept the husband? How is the relationship with him? Has our relationship changed drastically with your sister ? How does your dad feel about her getting married? Great piece.

    I liked that you shared a bit about your sisters life and how despite her being your half sister your considered her one in the same . Though the purpose of your piece was to focus on your relationship with Debbian, I became curious as to your brother and moments between him and Debbian and you and him. I wished you included more about your sister’s husband and your animosity was so strong towards him. I feel like had you included more examples about your interaction with him and how he treated you, your sister and family, the reader could have related more to the author. I like your take on marriage and how your describe your marriage to your everyday life. I feel like this part truly made piece. Overall I enjoy your writing style. Good job.

    The ability and experience to mature alongside someone you are related to AND respect is no common phenomenon. Being close to someone means that flaws are sometimes sought out and amplified. What is marriage? I don’t know. Some things are meant to be forever. MEANT. With life comes death. Nowadays with marriage comes divorce. The true partnership in this story is like that of a mentor-pupil relationship, not one where a ring is slipped onto another’s finger.

    This piece has a strong narrative voice. It displays a conflict, and has a strong resolution at the end as the narrator comes full circle on your intellectual journey. This piece does a good job with introducing both characters, and establishing their bond. Then it introduces who the narrator describes as an intruder. However, as the narrator becomes older, she is able to accept and understand this new bond. I love the questions the narrator asks during the piece, like what is marriage. It was quite interesting that she mentions she got married at the end, and I wanted to hear a little more about this new union, as it describes a new step in her life. I loved the ending:

    This line is artistically beautiful, but it also captures a moment of maturity in the narrator who was to immature in the beginning to understand the union between her sister and her husband.

    I really enjoyed this piece, I think the author did a great job at setting the voice tone in this essay which reflected jealousy mostly and then more love at the end.     The beginning of the piece felt like it was going to be a positive, promising story about the authors relationship with her siblings, but as the story progressed, it turned to how she was jealous and/ or distraught by her sister. The story felt a little too long and could use some trimming. The part about the definition of love would have been better if it was defined in the authors own words instead of “dictionaries describe it…”

    I really liked the journey of emotions felt in this piece. The author was clearly very conflicted on her sister getting married and on this stranger now pulling her favorite sister away. I liked how you included the emotional roller coaster. You showed us how you felt step by step of the journey. We see how you and your sister are close, we see the conflict of the brother in law getting between you two and then we see the narrator maturing and getting to appreciate the brother in law with time, not only that, but the narrator herself commits her own betrayal when she “marries” school. It’s conflict writing and resolution 101 and the end of the piece is satisfying. I’d like more detail as to the two sisters’ ages however, since age changes what stage of life the two are at and also communicates where their respective minds are at when the events of the story are occurring. I think more emphasis on age would help.

    I thought that the reason for the anger towards the sister was understated in this piece and made everything seem so melodramatic. I wasn’t sure that the relationship went as deep as to garner so much hostility for the sister for ‘betraying’ you. How close could people with such a large age gap be so close? It makes me believe that she had to be very immature for that connection to be so strong. I like that the piece ends on a positive note, but not that you followed in her footsteps because it only seemed like you did it to be like her and not for your own happiness.
