You know the sound of a slot machine after you’ve won and there is an overflow of coins just tumbling out of it? That was the sound of a guy furiously searching his pockets a foot away.

Men have this complete and utter refusal to put their change anywhere but in their pockets. It’s a phenomenon to women who carry around large wallets with roomy coin pockets, or who have a separate coin purse altogether.

This is a subject that always seems to frequent conversations with friends after they walk out of the store just having purchased something. Some men are fascinated that women keep their change. They are fascinated that we utilize coin pockets and invest in coin purses. Women are fascinated that men either don’t take their change, don’t have coin pockets in their wallets, or simply just drop their change into the pockets of their jeans.

Women tend to be more careful than men are. The idea of leaving money in open pockets without the security of zippers does not ever seem to be comprehensible to us.

We see bulky wallets outlined in the back pockets of men’s jeans and momentarily gawk. We gawk not at the size of the wallets, but we gawk in wonder of how unsafe the practice of leaving one in open reach is. We see men in raw denim jeans with holes where their wallets are, showcasing the weathered leather or designer branding when we shouldn’t have to know what their wallets look like unless they’re paying for dinner.

Perhaps women are floored by such a practice of men dealing with their money so carelessly because we simply don’t have the same means to carry our own in such a way. Pockets in skirts and dresses are rare, and often for novelty’s sake. Pockets in pants and jeans are thin and many times smaller than the size of our hands. But beyond the trends of fashion, we can look and see a broader scale of hidden meaning that implies women were simply not designed to be as careless as men—something they’ve rebranded as being carefree.

We can’t afford it.

Women cannot carelessly walk around wearing as little as possible, carelessly enjoy a conversation with a stranger too much without giving off the wrong idea, or carelessly tell the truth about what her co-worker looks like in her new dress without being called a bitch. Women are bound by restrictions beyond ourselves that call for a more careful way of living, and we become labeled as being neurotic. A woman’s life is among the greatest subjects of contention.

But above all, being careless threatens our safety and security.

We can’t be careless if turning around at any minute could mean being arrested when our child falls out of a faulty highchair. We can’t be careless when our blouses are an extra button undone and we unknowingly end up flashing our supervisors. We can’t be careless in missing the cue of a potentially abusive husband and having to face years of pain and suffering until gaining enough strength and support to leave him.

We can agree that mistakes are generally made by people, and accidents just happen. The general consensus is that mistakes carry more weight, but should this really apply in every case? Could we have foreseen all that would have gone so wrongly every time? Even when circumstances are beyond our own power, women are often forgiven less and blamed more. Being careful only seeks to minimize chances of mistakes and accidents. But now it’s not enough anymore, especially not if you’re a woman.

Now it’s your fault you were raped because of what you wore. It’s your fault your child died because you were supposed to be a 24/7 stay-at-home mom. It’s your fault the entire human race is sunken in sin because you listened to the serpent and ate the apple from the tree.

We argue that men and women are equals. But as long as they both exist, this will never prove true. We will never truly accomplish equalizing ourselves. We create laws that seek to provide balance for our genders. We create organizations to forward progressive thinking and improve society. It is a beautiful thing to strive for. Our society becomes better because of such efforts for change. At the end of the day, however, there is nothing we can create that will truly fix us.

    The writer believes that Men and Women are not equal. The writer introduces a different perspective towards things such as fashion. The fashion today does make it seem like men seem to be more careless than woman, however, what about suits for men? I would assume it makes them look professional and not careless. When you stated “The general consensus is that mistakes carry more weight” why is this true? Big accidents also carry a lot of weight. I agree with your statement, “women are often forgiven less and blamed more.” The writer reveals her identity when she states, “there is nothing we can create that will truly fix us.” She is taking the side of a feminist. What do you think the actual role of a woman should be? What will make Women as equal to Men?

    This piece was written specifically to defend if not promote feminism. Does the author have any idea what pressures men face daily? The fact that the story transitions from mere “pocket” change in the form of coins to that of the habits and constraints that society binds to either gender is not a perfectly smooth one. The author probably wrote this to speak out for females. She anticipates a mixed response from her audience.

    I think the example of change was a bit drawn out. I like the idea of women not being able to be careless the way a man usually are. I wish you provided more supporting evidence for this idea. It would’ve been interesting to include and argument a man would possibly have in defense to this belief you are discussing. “Now it’s your fault you were raped because of what you wore. It’s your fault your child died because you were supposed to be a 24/7 stay-at-home mom. It’s your fault the entire human race is sunken in sin because you listened to the serpent and ate the apple from the tree.”- This part really captivated me as the reader and I’m glad you included it. Overall, nice piece.

    I agree with Diali, the example of change that you used was drawn out. I would go a step farther and say that it should be edited a bit to be less general, or you should get rid of it completely. It seems like it’s there to throw off the reader, to make it so that the strong point at the end, your argument, comes as a bit of a surprise; but I’m not sure that that’s a convincing way to argue your point. The examples that you give are vague and hypothetical, if you state the point of your piece clearly, and give more specific examples I think it will become more relateable and more convincing. I feel like you have the start to a moving piece, if you work on your examples, and go into more detail I think the piece will really come together. Your second to last paragraph has good valid points that you need to delve deeper into. Good draft.

    I’m taking a “History of Sexuality” class right now, you capture the overall theme of the piece very well. We’re learning how the perceptions of sex and gender in society has been shaped and constantly reshaped since the beginning of mankind- look I just said mankind; not womankind, that in and of it self show’s a power discourse between men and women. You’re right, given the history of how much sex determined what roles people would play in society and what rights (or lack there of) they would have, it is nay impossible to undo all that damage. It is similar to the problem America has with African Americans or Native Americans; the blight this country has inflicted on both groups is so tragic and so ingrained that even tough the original victims are long dead and gone, the pain and memory is passed on each generation. It gets better tough, every generation becomes more inclusive and gradually a new group assimilation/tolerance/muse of equality tries to assert itself. Men an women might never be equal, but we can try.

    I really like your example about men being careless (and getting away with it) and women having to be extra cautious. I’ve actually never gave women’s jeans such thought. Like no wonder women carry purses and hand bags, they can’t fit shit in those damn pockets, they’re too small to. I feel kind of stupid not noticing that, (yes, you’re getting feedback from a dummy, horray?) but the fact that I didn’t notice probably gives more credence to the women’s perceptive not being considered by men.

    I enjoyed your play on words and the way you carry the idea of “change” throughout your piece. You wrote about a topic that was relatable to women and one that is also quite controversial. You provided excellent examples of the double standards many women face daily. Like for example when you mentioned that we cannot be careless in the way we carry ourselves and the way we dress. I’m glad the narrator was frank and realistic when writing this piece. As a woman myself, I can understand the attitude acquired by the writer. That of the fact that women and men will never be equal. And perhaps we don’t have to be, I’d like to think that we could be appreciated for what we are instead of striving for this unrealistic goal of being equal. Your voice is clear throughout the piece, you have a unique style that is quite obvious in your writing which is great because it gives your writing a lot of character. I think that I would’ve enjoyed the piece even more if the beginning was a little more attention grabbing. It was clever to begin talking about change in the monetary sense and then getting into your topic, but something’s missing within making that transition.

    The typical double-standard cliches are things that forever haunt our society.
    Overall it’s quite evident that this piece is subtly two-toned. It’s almost as if women are just naturally superior or smarter than men.

    The introduction works because it’s a perfect analogy set up for the theme of you piece. When reading it I didn’t know where it would go but once you went into females have to be more responsible a than males it saw the connect and was invested in the story .

    When you mention women being raped, watching kids 24/7 and Adam and Eve I want that to be explored deeper bringing into perspective of society and media toward women. Do woman see themselves as helpless and do someone identity with being care free as oppose to careless.

    The mention of sexism would bring moe wait to this piece because that’s what you mention.

    I don’t know what my take away is suppose to be. I agree with everything you said but I’m struggling to find the message of the piece.

    “Women tend to be more careful than men are.” After reading the loose change scenario that was given in the beginning of this piece, I feel like this sentence should say that women tend to be more appreciative than men are instead. I guess you are trying to say that men are careLESS. One could see why you would feel that way when it comes to the money scenario. However, I feel like this has to do with being less appreciative or not taking the value of a penny seriously. Women tend to be more appreciative of things. Of family, of Love, of Life? Women and men are not treated equal was also what I got out of this piece. They are unbalanced in society? I love the drive in the voice that I hear as I read this piece. You have a passion for this subject matter and it shows in your writing. The change scenario leading into women vs. men was a little confusing for me at first because I felt like this was going to be a piece on a bunch of coins and how they are unappreciated. If you could clarify the unclear areas, it would allow the piece to be better understood. Overall, great topic. I’d like to see this piece expand into something greater. By the way, great connection to Eve and the serpent. Such power in that line.

    I found the topic very stimulating because it began by using a universal habit of storing change to illustrate the “double standard” in our society. I appreciated how the essay employed a formal academic structure to speak about this topic; for example, the thesis statement appears in the last sentence of paragraph six. The voice of the speaker is serious because they have an understanding of the way women are portrayed in society, but we see that they intentionally use humor in the line that says, “We see men in raw denim jeans with holes where their wallets are, showcasing the weathered leather or designer branding when we shouldn’t have to know what their wallets look like unless they’re paying for dinner” to connect the reader to the piece.

    I would suggest that the writer reference the idea of change to the reader because it would be a valuable literary device and would reinforce the example in the beginning of the piece. I would also suggest that the narrator guide the reader slowly into the penultimate paragraph because I was taken back about when the speaker talks about females getting rape. Throughout, the piece I felt that the author knew a lot of information, but I needed some outside reference that relates to this idea of “double standard” and “conformity, ” so the reader has evidence that the writer knows what they are talking about.

    As reading your piece I couldn’t help but think about the Psychology Of Women class I am taking this semester. Just like your piece we have also spoke about the double standard. Men are aggressive, cannot control themselves. Women are weak and vulnerable. The idea that people believe that a situation is desireable for one group but deplorable for another. In this case, that women are at fault. “It’s your fault the entire human race is sunken in sin because you listened to the serpent and ate the apple from the tree.” I believe that you do a really good job criticizing those who believe in the myth and in the double standard.

    I think that everyone needs to be careful. I’ve seen men and women attacked; however, I do agree that perhaps women need to be more careful, or better said that this is a society in which women are both perceived as needing to be more careful and must actually be more careful.

    I try to be a feminist, but I know I carry my share of misogynistic tendencies and thoughts. I try, and that’s the best I can do. I’ve never been very good at understanding people with empathy, only sympathetically. This piece makes me feel for women, but I can’t always relate to their experience because I experience something different. Often, because of my size and gender, people will often treat me better.

    The whole eve metaphor is a perfect example of how religion affects societies views on gender. I personally hate that myth and what it’s done to our culture, but then I could go into a rant on hating the bible and other things like it.

    I hate the blaming of the victim. Rape should NEVER occur, and if it does it is the fault of the perpetrator not the victim. Here I have to agree especially that women must be careful, because society often does blame the victim.

    However, when all is said and done, I believe that women have the most power out of the two genders. Physically, or so we’re told, men are stronger; but women have 9 times our pain threshold, lower centers of gravity for better balance, and powerful hips and legs. There are times when a woman can “summon” her friends to fight on her behalf. I’ve seen this happen. I am a part of this. My little sister has two older and stronger brothers who will pretty much kill anyone who harms her. We’re not psychopaths, but we are very protective of her, and we really can’t help it. By virtue of her existence she has that power over us. These are very primal examples in my opinion, but valid ones nonetheless. We live in a twisted society where women are succeeding more in education and employment, yet they are paid less. They have the power yet they are blamed when they are the victims. Frankly, I don’t know what the hell is going on.

    The beginning of your piece explained the tittle. I assumed that the piece would be about literally change of money. The addition of the correlation of money and men with women seemed confusing to me. I like the idea of giving an example to prove your idea, but I would suggest adding another idea other than change. This would be generalizing men to women. I agree with Dalia and Henry. You would have a choice either to use another example or remove that part of your piece.
    The second part of your piece is really strong; the difference between a man and a woman is a really good topic. You should expand your ideas more in order to support them. I really enjoy the way you are starting to develop your ideas.
    This piece can be developed to a better argument with more details added. Good luck and good job.

    This piece seems to discuss two main points. In the beginning you develop a story line about the difference in the way men and women cary change. However, about half way into the piece, you begin talking about the broader topic of socially constructed gender roles. After you do this, there is a slight change in the form and voice of the piece. You use the line “We cannot afford it”. Before this point, the narrator is speaking mostly from the 3rd person point of view. She uses the terms “women” and “men” to address each sex. However, as the piece progresses, she switches to 1st person, and uses the term “we”. She now begins to talk about being a part of a gendered group. This switch works for the piece, and adds to the style and narrative voice. Overall, I loved this piece, and it had a great narrative voice.

    As a female I enjoyed this piece because I could relate to most of the stated facts, and it’s obvious that the author is writing this from a woman’s standpoint. However, as much as I agree with the stated facts about; woman can’t afford to be careless, how about men? Most men feel the pressure of making enough money to provide for their families. Nowadays how we interpret maleness is how much flow they have in their bank accounts.

    take out the paying for dinner part, it goes against your point, it seems like your assuming men should pay for dinner, and since this piece is a going against the roles of woman in society, you should refrain from doing the same, but for men.

    now, you bring great points, and i wish i could say i agree with you but i dont, maybe its bc i am a a “man” but damn, is it really that hard being a woman? lol

    this piece obviously has a bias, and as an opinion piece there would b no other way. I just believe to strengthen your point you may have to include some personal experiences. I do agree that woman cannot talk to strangers without the stranger (assuming hes a man) taking it as flirtation. Thats a great point and i dont know why it works like that. Also that eve reference was GREAT, killed it. Alot of subtext with that line.

    To recreate a scenario that may have produced Earth’s first organic molecules, researchers built upon experiments from 1953 when American chemists Stanley Miller and Harold Urey concocted a gas mixture mimicking the atmosphere of ancient Earth. Miller and Urey combined ammonia (NH3), methane (CH4), hydrogen (H2) and water, enclosed their “atmosphere” inside a glass sphere and jolted it with electricity, producing simple amino acids containing carbon and nitrogen. The Miller-Urey experiment, as it is now known, supported the scientific theory of abiogenesis: that life could emerge from nonliving molecules.
    For the new study, scientists revisited the 1953 experiments but directed their attention toward electrical activity on a smaller scale, said senior study author Dr. Richard Zare, the Marguerite Blake Wilbur Professor of Natural Science and professor of chemistry at Stanford University in California. Zare and his colleagues looked at electricity exchange between charged water droplets measuring between 1 micron and 20 microns in diameter. (The width of a human hair is 100 microns.)

    “The big droplets are positively charged. The little droplets are negatively charged,” Zare told CNN. “When droplets that have opposite charges are close together, electrons can jump from the negatively charged droplet to the positively charged droplet.”
    The researchers mixed ammonia, carbon dioxide, methane and nitrogen in a glass bulb, then sprayed the gases with water mist, using a high-speed camera to capture faint flashes of microlightning in the vapor. When they examined the bulb’s contents, they found organic molecules with carbon-nitrogen bonds. These included the amino acid glycine and uracil, a nucleotide base in RNA.

    “We discovered no new chemistry; we have actually reproduced all the chemistry that Miller and Urey did in 1953,” Zare said. Nor did the team discover new physics, he added — the experiments were based on known principles of electrostatics.

    “What we have done, for the first time, is we have seen that little droplets, when they’re formed from water, actually emit light and get this spark,” Zare said. “That’s new. And that spark causes all types of chemical transformations.”
