Sitting at my computer screen I watched the awesome power of the twerking fumble that was Miley Cyrus’s performance a couple of weeks ago, for which she has still not stopped receiving press. Why though, did I decide to watch this? Because the link I saw said something about Miley Cyrus acting overtly naughty or some such idiocy that I just had to watch. The part of me that is a cross between an overly –zealous dog and a horny teenager just drooled at the prospect of one of disney’s little whores becoming more whore-ish. The part of me that is a grown adult pinched my nose in shame that a popular figure could get away with this. Is the whole MKULTRA mind control conspiracy true? Or is this truly a statement of the general stupidity of the human condition? Why do we are constantly eye-fed news about Disney girls screwing up? Perhaps it is of our ignorance instead.

I watched Miley twerk her little white ass off. I was shocked. The performance was so forced; it seemed like she was trying so hard to be a “bad girl.” I saw pictures of the reactions of other celebrities, and realized that their facial expressions really matched my own. The reaction of all four Smiths (Will, Jada, Jaden, and Willow) was nothing short of hilarious to me. They’re jaws were dropped but they have been very well trained in etiquette so they managed not to catch any flies. It was like their poker faces were trying to fight with their shocked faces.

I couldn’t help but wonder if the conspiracy theory about celebrity mind control Roseanne Barr is famous for having “come clean” about is true, especially where Disney is concerned. Moreover, I found myself asking the question “what the hell is up with these female ‘crash’ celebrities?” I swore that it must be a practice of the media to keep these celebrities popular by any means possible, and distract us from our real lives. After all, no publicity is bad publicity, or so I’ve heard.

I corrected my slouch in my chair and adjusted my computer so that I wouldn’t slouch as much before moving on to some other link. I honestly have no memory of what I looked at before or after Miley’s performance. Maybe there is something to that mind control thing, or maybe I’m just as ignorant as anybody else.

The next day after seeing this twerk failure, I saw Miley’s video for her song “We can’t stop.” I found it to be a bit sentimental. I dare say say, I actually liked it. Somewhere in my body, my testosterone was threatening to leave. I couldn’t blame it. Hell, I heard the song on the bus a couple of days ago and I was humming one of the lyrics, which she borrowed from an old school rap, in my head. This mind control stuff must be pretty effective.

On facebook, one of my friends posted a feature in a popular newspaper using a stick-thin model to show us how to twerk. The friend was upset about the same things I was; I must choose good company. First of all I hated how thin she was; when I feel like I can play someone’s ribs like a xylophone, it’s time for them to eat a sandwich. Second, and on this I disagreed with my friend, I had to disagree with people’s reaction to twerking. There are a lot of sexy dances out there, and this is just another one of them. I love seeing women bend over and jiggle their butts, and I cannot lie. I’d be lying if I said I didn’t like it. What I don’t like; however, is how everyone gives so much attention to the matter, which pretty much perpetuates what I believe is a media ploy to keep us from forgetting celebrities while we forget about ourselves. It’s the same principle as reality shows I realized. We watch shows like “JerseyShore” because these people are fucked up. It makes us feel better about ourselves, so we keep watching. Maybe we experience emotions of crap we don’t normally go through vicariously through these idiots. I’m not sure; I only watch reality cooking shows and Faceoff, which to me have some substance. I’m an artist who likes to cook.

I’ve come up with the theory that the media forcibly applies the whole “trainwreck” lifestyle to female performers, especially when they used to work for Disney. Just look at Brittany Spears, Lindsey Lohan, Amanda Bynes (I think she worked for Disney. If not, she might as well have) and now Miley Cyrus. I wondered if these ladies are in on the whole thing. For millions of dollars, I’d let everyone believe I was fucked up with no impulse control too.  The scariest thoughts, however, are: what if these ladies are not in on it? And why do Justin Timberlake and Ryan Gosling Junior never seem to make a mistake? What sort of message is being portrayed here?

A few days after my unromantic tryst with Miley Cyrus gossip, I saw a “Twerk Fail” video where a girl is upsidedown twerking on a door that someone happens to open. She falls down on a glass table and her leg catches fire because it hit a candle that was on top of it. A day or so later I find out it was a prank video created by late night TV show host Jimmy Kimmel. He releases the full clip of the video, with him coming out wearing the same pink shirt as the girl, and using a fire extinguisher on the girl’s leg. He then smiles at the camera.  I smiled back and laughed. I thought there was some hope left for us after all… except for a week or so later when I read about the fact that Kim Jong-un executed 12 people in an orchestra, one of them being his ex-girlfriend, while we were gawking at Miley being slutty. It almost seems like a blatant distraction, but it’s a damned obvious statement about the media and even where people like me direct our attention. At moment I could imagine some personified nerves in my brain reporting to my cerebellum in a military fashion: “Sir, we’ve lost the boner!” one of them says. The camera zooms in on a nerve wearing a bunch of medals with a face that looks like the Lorax. “Damn.” he swears.

“A South Korean Newspaper reported that this week North Korea’s communist dictator, Kim Jong-un, executed a dozen members of the Unhasu Orchestra – including Jong-un’s former girlfriend, singer Hyon Sung-wol – as their relatives and musicians from three other pop bands were forced to watch. Following the firing squad, the on-lookers were all sent to concentration camps.” This excerpt is written by author Rick Robinson in The Daily Caller.

    In a society dominated by appearance and celebrity status, it’s almost as if you weren’t famous or popular you didn’t matter at all. The way I see it, leading figures in fields that are on-demand, especially in acting, will always escalate to a position in post-Industrial revolution capitalistic democracy where they will have their own images etched onto the side of Mount Rushmore. At least Great Britain is smart enough to have the Royal family be the puppets and sponge all the celebrity calamity in the commonwealth. We had a George Washington, a Lincoln, a JFK, Reagan, GWB and now this Obama guy. And really, now getting to the point, this whole Miley Cirus hiccup and Disney’s involvement is just fucking silly. I mean “shurrrreeeee” at least the idols that we are worshiping nowadays aren’t communist or fascist dictators. But the whole brain drain industry, whether held by the government, big press or entertainment clique, isn’t big on tax returns. The “big fumble” that wasn’t new to former “participators” like Britney Spears, Lindsey Lohan and Amanda Bynes (and perhaps, just perhaps Janet Jackson if you drank enough beer to coerce yourself into thinking that the 2004 Super Bowl was another Disney flick 🙂 just goes to show exactly how fucking dumb this fucking nation has become. Apparently the more stupid you are, the greater your showmanship is. Jessica Biel from 7th Heaven once exploited her own body to try to fasten herself to the “bad girl” rep and got herself booted from the show. They say that the individual human being is smart, but the masses of humans (known as “people”) are stupid. Somehow, when it comes to Uncle Sam’s Acres, I still doubt that.

    Kim Jong-un kills his own people in North Korea and across the globe we are pitifully hollering at the mishaps of some celebrity that is affiliated with the once-great Disney. This does prove to be a sleeve of broken dreams for me because Disney once used to be so profound that… *tear* Never mind. Anyways, in a globalized world where America plays the police force of the world, we turn inward, like the Sith do with their hate, except we do it with our celebrity fandom, instead of maintaining peace universal peace for generations to come like the Jedi. George Lucas must be pissed, and not because Star Wars belongs to Disney now. Great Britain, which initiated the Industrial Revolution and was the wealthiest nation in the world for some time, was also the capital of the biggest slums and ghettos at the same time. We, the most powerful and prestigious nation at the moment (please ignore the rise of China) harbor ignorance in the most insignificant of distractions. I know it’s the 24th, only 3 days into Fall. But please.

    First, what was the mind control: Roseanne Barr incident? I think i managed to miss that (I don’t follow the news as much as I should). Second, it was comforting to read this. With the way that mass media encourages starts to melt down and blow up, its nice to see that there are people out there who can look away from the metaphorical train wreck. I would also just like to point out that things like the article that you read on Kim Jong-Un isn’t totally reliable, you have to take these with a grain of salt. That was originated in Japan and the people were allegedly killed in regards to breaking some sort of pornography laws in a way that would be damaging to Kim Jong-Un’s wife (a different woman from the one mentioned in the article you read). A similar story with the woman you read about being killed was published in a South Korean newspaper a week or two after the Japanese one, but there is no fact checking in any of these articles. People can’t fact check because its North Korea so they don’t bother. (Not that I support the North but I just wanted to point out that you can’t trust everything you read.)

    I liked reading about Miley Cyrus because I find her liberating. I, too, do not understand why her twerking has received so much attention from the press. I do not agree that Miley Cyrus is a “whore” and I think that word chosen to describe her and others is inappropriate. I think you could elaborate on what you think celebrity news is in 2013. I think your writing could be more interesting if you saw yourself as more than just a perv. You could write more about how too thin some women are these days. I would also like to know more about why you think the media victimizes women more than men. You get serious when discussing Kim Jong-un and that is very appreciated. Though I like Miley Cyrus hearing more of your real self would be good.

    I do not think that you should focus on mind control when you rewrite this piece. That sounds like an obsession of yours that really is not relatable to others.

      Hmm. It’s not that she is a whore so much as there is a thinly veiled perpetration of the image of a whore. I say whore because to me it is considerably more derogatory than prostitute or lady of negotiation. I am not a fan of the image. I hope that it was not misconstrued that I refer to all females or any other group of females in this way. The professor would like me to continue on with this sort of “perv” character, but humanize him by adding doubts and possibly other more well-rounded aspects.

    I liked how you used a lot of reference to proof your point such as artist and music to evoke the feeling or assimilate things to that. I enjoy the description that you give when discussing the press towards Miley Cyrus twerk. When you started talking about Kim I did not enjoy that as much. It does inform us about him, but I like the first part of your piece rather than the last part.

    I got the sense that the writer was disturbed by Miley Cyrus’s performance twerking in particular and by the “train wreck” female celebrities in general (and the media’s obsession with informing us all about it every step of the way); but what I didn’t get is why does it matter? I’m not a Cyrus fan and I pay no mind to tabloids or gossip, so I’m just indifferent. My position is if you don’t like something, don’t consume it. To transcend that and for this to be a relevant social commentary, you’d need to bring someone like me, someone who doesn’t consume these things (never watched Jersey Shore, didn’t see the VMA’s), into the fold and explain why I should care and be paying attention.

    The obvious fact is that all art is subjective. Whether Cyrus’s performance was tasteful or distasteful or whether her music sounds good or bad, is completely up to the viewer; so while I understand that you did not particularly enjoy the performance, what I fail to understand is where the social commentary came from; let alone the connection to Kim Jung-un. The dots between Cyrus and Jung-un need to be much more established if you are trying to somehow make the jump from her twerking to him killing people. Its sounds interesting and I’m eager to read how you may pull it off.

    i Agree with premise of the piece about how the media distracts us with celebrity news from “real” news. i haven’t even heard of Kim Jong-un killing people but i have heard of Miley’s twerking. this sad fact for me does give your piece creditability (for me) but you fall short of convincing me about systematic mind control. I’m also a little confused about the link between Miley’s twerking, mind control and Kim Jong-un. unless Jong-un set up Miley’s twerking i don’t see the benefit of distracting Americans from the horror of a known enemy to the country. i also disagree with your statement that no publicity is bad publicity. all press is good press is a phrase that is ingrained in pop culture but your phrase i haven’t heard at all. no publicity is no publicity and for those that have had a lot of bad publicity, no publicity would be good publicity; like Nicole Richie, Paris Hilton, Lindsey Lohan, Britney spears, Chris Brown and many others. your over all premise is great about being more interested and remembering celebrity news more so that worldly current events. i would have like to see more criticisms on the values and attentions of Americans than the commentary about domestic mind control for the benefit of foreign enemies. even though i don’t think that’s what you meant that’s what was conveyed.

      The point of the phrase is that you know the names of all these people.

    I really liked the work in general. The writer provides an evident idea that media creates a “trainwreck” lifestyle to female performers, however, is quite subjective. As a writer myself I didn’t find calling Miley Cyrus a “whore” as well. I really like the use of your references, I felt the references added a great supplement to your work in general. A work of art is always viewed differently by its critics. For example, this work, some have positive reactions while others have negative reactions to your work. The idea of twerking and the idea of killing people are really far apart. The media presents these aspects in a different way. You might want to another reference to create a strong bridge between twerking and killing people in the media.

    Although in exaggeration, the media continues to reveal to the world about the truth, yet individuals still prefer watching gossip rather than understanding the crime around the world and understanding who lost justice. I really like your work because it can lead to many different arguments.

    This was a very interesting piece which touched on a few popular topics in the media such as the negative connotations associated with the behaviors of some young women in the television industry and how certain aspects of pop culture influence people in today’s society. The narrator’s voice in this piece seemed very comical and analytical possibly to engage readers. The narrator used great examples to convey how he felt about women and twerking etc. There were great references used to validate the author’s position which is an important technique to used so that different things in the piece are clear to the reader.

    There was a discussion in the piece about mind control and how objects in the media have such capabilities. When the author uses the example of the twerk fail video, he mentions that there may be hope of media failing to further control minds. Then he takes back the statement when he talks about how he became focused on the story of the execution of a group of people made by a North Korean dictator. To me it isn’t clear right away how the execution piece ties in to the story. This could use clarification. Also ending the piece on media mind control suggests that this was the overall theme of the piece when the title suggests that the main focus is twerking. Twerking should probably be revisited towards the end of the piece to give the piece a stronger sense of the overall connection between media mind control and twerking.

    I like the fact that you admitted to being drawn to Miley Cyrus and her controversy although you knew it was a bit foolish. It supports the mind control concept you mentioned. I believe you should have briefly summarized the Rosanne Barr theory because not every reader (including myself) would know what that is. The last few paragraphs confused me but I can understand your overall concept and thought it was great.

    I think this piece is pretty good. I like how you describe each feeling and reaction and relate them to one and another. I think your reaction about the whole Miley Cyrus plot is just one out of many. I am not sure about the whole Kim Jong-un excuting those people is true or not, but the fact that Miley’s twerk managed to catch the media’s attention says alot about our world. Especially what we feed into, when there is so much other serious and important things going on in our world.

    I enjoyed the subject of your piece because it touched on the issue our generation faces with being controlled by media and society being consumed with less relative events. I thought you touching on the subject of Kim Jong-Un was brilliant as opposed to a situation more publicized like the crisis in Syria for instance. Your writing gave me as the reader insight to the male perspective the Miley Cyrus controversy and you used interesting wording to express that. Overall, it was a great first draft in my opinion.

    It sounds like you’re trying to do creative nonfiction. I suggest you stop talking about your boners and whatnot. Talk about your responses to whatever your topic is, but don’t use indirect diction that’s fluffing up what is actually happening, such as in the sentence, “Somewhere in my body, my testosterone was threatening to leave.” Not only is it confusing and ambiguous, it distracts us from the point. And there are so many more things wrong with that sentence, I don’t know where to start. Moving on; you need to be sure about your focus with this piece, because your focus seems to go all over the place. Is it on the media in general, or is it more specifically about girls being portrayed worse by the media than the men, or is it about American media being superficial and petty? You also talk about the celebrity mind control conspiracy theory. You need to connect all your points together and/or take out the points that don’t serve your story at all. It’s a confusing and unfocused piece, but it’s clearly not a memoir, so don’t tell the reader too much about yourself and your experiences unless they’re totally relevant and able to strengthen your story.
    Be aware that if you are writing a creative nonfiction piece, you need to sound more of an authority on what you’re writing about. Do research and draw fair comparisons, for one thing. You compared four women with two men (Britney Spears, whose name you spelled wrong; Lindsay Lohan, whose name you also spelled wrong; Amanda Bynes, who was a Nickelodeon star and not Disney; and Miley Cyrus, against Justin Timberlake and Ryan Gosling). There is no way you can make an observation that the men are better off if you don’t at least try to make it look like you are not just writing what you can think of off the top of your head. I also suggest being careful with your verb tenses; there are tense shifts when you write. “Just drooled at the prospect of one of Disney’s little whore becoming more whore-ish” is an opportunity to explore why you feel that way and speak for others who may share the same feeling; I would reword the “becoming more whore-ish” part. “They’re” means they are and “their” is the possessive pronoun—referencing “They’re jaws” in the second paragraph. Ultimately, I feel that you could go somewhere with this piece if you clean it up, but at the moment, I’m not sure where it is.

      True on two points, I could focus this piece a little more and do a little more recess. That said, I’m not sure if you are offended by what I’ve chosen to write. I put the “fluff” in to make it more interesting, which overall it has the success rate. I have no taste for overly-written academic papers, nor anything boring. If I’m going to use unnecessary words, I feel I should make it fun. I also know the difference between “they’re” and “their;” I would assume that someone simply made a grammatical error if they’re this far along than that they don’t know the difference between the two words.

      I don’t write things to be taken completely seriously, which is not to say that my works lack any serious or deep content; rather, I just try to talk to people like a human being and step it up by removing some of the normal barriers. I’m trying to give an experience where instead of me just talking to the reader boring them to death with my words, the reader is inside my head. It seems more interesting to me and thankfully it looks like a lot of people found it that way.

      I’m not sure what is confusing about the “fluff” for you. I haven’t heard much from anyone else on this. Perhaps you found it detracting from the reading which I think is a response atypical to most of the people who have read this. If you know anyone who agrees with you, I’d like to understand why this is confusing. Perhaps there’s a better way I could implement it.

    Reading this piece was very entertaining you do a great job a showing your personality throughout your writing. You took a topic that would be boring, and monotonous and made it readable. In this area this piece excels. However this piece seems unorganized at times, and after reading it left me with more confusion about this twerking phase than before. Its sometimes a ramble, that has no certain direction. This can easily be fixed by moving some paragraphs around.

    I enjoyed your thoughts on twerking. Although there were parts that made me uncomfortable, it was also your frank maleness that I loved most. I thought this piece was honest and fun. Regardless of gender, we all have an obsession with the sexualization of young females and your commentary in the beginning was spot on with how curious most people are about the subject. Twerking has us all fascinated! Although I could not say that I fully followed the connection you were trying to establish from your beginning thoughts to the ending’s larger commentary on society, I will say that the first portion was my favorite. I would love for you to consider expanding that section and the general discussion of twerking in your piece because it’s very interesting to hear a male’s thoughts on this sensationalized behavior and what those types of videos mean to the average guy watching.

    Your credibility in this piece was high, especially since you did not just mention your experience with the whole Miley Cyrus fiasco. You went online, saw photographs of the event and even found the Jimmy Kimmel skit. I felt that mentioning Kimmel was very up to date and necessary to enforce your topic.

    The paragraph about the teen starlets that grew up to have “trainwreck” lifestyles felt like a side note to this piece, when talking about twerking.

    The Roseanne Barr mind control subject could have either been elaborated more or removed in its entirety.

    The final paragraph about the South Korean Newspaper was definitely another situation in which the essay derailed. I felt like it did not have a place in this.

    Lastly, I appreciate how honest you were in this piece. You mentioned that you like seeing “women bend over and jiggle their butts,” but that you would be lying if you said that you didnt.

    Basically stars gone wild.
    However, I think that there are a lot of arbitrary thoughts that should be removed to stay on topic.
    It seems a bit like a stream of conciousness rather than a tightly-packed peice.

    I admit that when I first read your piece, I was biased because you basically discredited Miley Cyrus by calling her a whore in your introduction. After re-reading it, I see another possible purpose for “your accusation.” By calling Miley Cyrus a whore, and then admitting that you too (like the rest of the world) were glued to the TV while you watched Miley proves that you have also become part of a culture that has become mind controlled. You admit this during your piece, when you question yourself because you actually enjoyed her music.
    The piece was well written and I love how you ended it by giving vital information to the reader. You are proving your point that while we sit here and discuss Miley Cyrus, we are completely missing more important information. I do believe that your main point was the mind control that’s created by these teenage “fads” such as twerking. Your piece outlines how performing a simple dance can change someone’s image from an angel to a whore. I think I would like you to go more in depth about this “mind control” you claim that you’ve become obsessed with in your theory. It seems very interesting and relatable. Also, maybe you could analyze the focus point of your essay and instead of attacking her (which definitely would be what a product of mind control would do) you could go further and analyze her actions. Do you actually believe Miley Cyrus is a whore? And by who’s definition? …

    Is it mind control? After reading your post I realized how important it is for people to listen to the media and their opinions on topics like Miley’s twerking. People often side with whatever the media explains, including myself. Why can’t Miley twerk without a negative thought running in our head? She still got more views than anyone else’s tweaking video. I’m not protecting Miley or saying anything bad about her, it’s just I was thinking about why we are so robotic with everything the media says. Sorry if maybe this reply isn’t correlating with your text, but it caused me to think in this way. Your post is great. Anyways, let’s think for our selves. Are we just enslaved to media? Are we controlled by sex? I don’t know. And if it is mind control, we are mind controlling ourselves.

    I thought the topic was very compelling because it is relevant to our society since we are engrossed in social media and celebrities. The narrator’s voice is informative and humorous because he over-exaggerates humor to point out how society is so polluted by the media. For example, in the line: “There are a lot of sexy dances out there…I love seeing women bend over and jiggle their butts, and I cannot lie. I’d be lying if I said I didn’t like it…” then he begins the next sentence by illustrating how he is a product of the social media and their influence of society. I appreciated how the narrator includes the excerpt that talks about Kim Jong-Un because it illustrates how the influence of the media is more destructive than we think.
    The reoccurring idea that is scattered throughout this piece is the idea of “MKULTRA mind control” however I do not see any reference to any experiments, so the writer’s credibility quickly diminishes because the writer do not expound on this theory. I think that you elaborate more about male celebrities not being criticized in the media because the piece only touches upon this idea. I think the line that begins with “On Facebook…to eat a sandwich” is not necessary to the piece, so you might want to consider cutting it out of the piece.
